Upon Jazmyne's return from Fiji there was a lot to reflect on.
“It was an amazing experience to see Fiji and the University of the South Pacific’s Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies. It has been a dream of mine to go there after being introduced to Epeli Hau’ofa and his work when I was studying at Waseda University in Japan. I was reunited with fellow dancers I’ve met in the past years and I made some new friends that I will hope to see in the years to come. It was really great performing within such a diverse festival.”
Jazmyne performed the piece “Wanting Memories” to a nostalgic lullaby style song by Keali’i Reichel—a perfect frame for the narration and storytelling movement performed on stage in the setting of her “old grandma’s living room”. This piece was danced for in memory of her ancestors and reflected her current stage in life.
Mahalo to Peter Rockford Espiritu, ODT dancers, fellow international performers and the staff at the university. Mahalos go out to Fiji, for being a great host with some real friendly people that welcomed us graciously.
